Sinus Augmentation
Exciting news for patients who previously couldn’t receive implants: sinus augmentations, commonly known as sinus lifts, are now making it possible! This procedure increases the bone volume in the upper jaw, creating a solid foundation for dental implants. Many individuals who were once deemed unsuitable for implants due to bone loss can now enjoy the benefits of improved chewing, enhanced speech, and better aesthetics. Don’t let past limitations hold you back—transform your smile today!
SINUS AUGMENTATION-BONE GRAFTING THE PROCESS
We typically opt for the lateral approach to sinus lifts for enhanced predictability and long-lasting results, even when vertical approach could be used. The key to successful dental implants lies in having sufficient bone to support them. There are two primary types of sinus lifts: lateral and vertical. The choice of procedure depends on the extent of bone loss. If there’s enough bone to stabilize the implant, we can use the vertical approach, or lateral approach, allowing for simultaneous implant placement and sinus grafting. However, if bone levels are inadequate, a lateral approach is necessary, which requires complete healing before the implant can be placed. Sinus augmentation represents a significant advancement, offering hope to those who once thought they were not candidates for implants to replace their upper teeth. What matters is success and we will do whatever it takes to make our procedures successful, always keeping in mind our patients goals.
Vertical Sinus Augmentation Procedure
Before starting, our board-certified oral surgeon ensures you are completely numb. A small incision is made in the gums at the implant site, and space is prepared for the implant. Bone is then placed between the ridge of bone and the sinus membrane. The implant is inserted into the upper jaw, and the site is closed with sutures to initiate healing. Typically, healing takes about 6 months before your general dentist can place a tooth on the implant.
Lateral Sinus Augmentation Procedure
After ensuring you are completely numb, a small incision is made between the premolar and molar area above the tooth roots. The surgeon creates a small opening in the bone to access the sinus cavity. The sinus membrane is gently elevated, and bone graft material is placed underneath it. Once sufficient bone is in place, sutures are used to close the area, initiating the healing process. This procedure typically takes about 30 minutes, with healing and maturation of the new bone requiring 6 months. Sometimes we even choose a lateral approach at implant placement to get more bone to grow around the implant, allowing for longer longevity and stability.
