What Causes Veneers to Fail?
With proper care porcelain veneers can last as long as 10 years. However, there are times when veneers may need to be replaced. There are many reasons why veneers can potentially fail, some reasons may be due to the dentist who placed them such as poor construction or improper tooth preparation. Other reasons can be due to the patient such as poor oral care or habits such as forgetting to brush or bruxism.

Veneer Cement Leakage
Veneers can fail due to many things. The good thing is most times these veneers can be fixed. Some veneers appear and feel too thick. This is either because the dentist did not remove enough tooth structure, or the lab made the veneers too large (over bulked). This happens a lot with a few brands of veneers claiming you can have very minimal or no prep at all done. However, they are often too thick and fall off due to inferior quality bond to the existing tooth. Some veneers appear too long, forming “bunny teeth” or “piano keys”. Sometimes veneers will have no shine or lack luster, this means the dentist or lab did not properly finish the veneers before they placed them.
Tooth Injuries
After a sports injury, hard fall, or other unforeseen accident, damage caused by injury can affect any dental restoration, veneers included. If an injury has resulted in damage to dental veneers it should be replaced as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the gums or surrounding teeth.
Decayed and Overbulked Veneers
A lot of patients come to our office with veneers that are constantly falling off. This is not normal; it could be that your veneer preparation is not right or that the veneers were not properly bonded to the teeth. This does not necessarily mean your dentist used a poor-quality bonding agent. Bonding teeth to porcelain is a very delicate procedure that could be tainted by saliva, blood, or water. Also, if the teeth and veneers are not dried and treated properly before insertion, this could happen, causing unsightly dark marks around the margins of veneers. This “leaking” could mean decay is multiplying rapidly underneath these restorations. Poor bonding could also leave open areas between the tooth and veneer where decay can seep in.
Poor Construction
Veneers that are created poorly are more prone to failing. Poor construction on veneers may appear as overly bulky, thick, or otherwise unnatural looking in the mouth that may lead to discoloration of the veneers and subsequent failing. Poorly constructed veneers can also affect the integrity and durability of the veneers.

How to Identify Failed Veneers
Color error is a big red flag that your veneers could have been done much better. With all the advances in dental technology, you should be unable to detect the difference in the color of a veneer and a natural tooth. If you are having sensitivity in your veneers, this could be a sign that the veneer did not adhere properly to the tooth, allowing for air and bacteria to work its way inside. You should feel no or little sensitivity, and the veneer should look flawless and flush against the tooth structure. Always ask to see before and after photos of the cases your dentist has completed. If you are unhappy with the results or your dentist cannot come up with any photos, you may want to reconsider the procedure being done there.
Some dentists might not have gone to special training courses for the correct preparation and placement of veneers. Just because a dentist is licensed does not mean they know how to correctly fabricate veneers and bond them to teeth. One of the most important things in dentistry is to constantly attend continuing education seminars.
