Oral DNA

Oral DNA

Dr. Koeppel, director of Koeppel Dental Group, along with very few other elite dentists and periodontists, offers in-office salivary diagnostic tests to obtain precise information about your risk for periodontal disease (gum disease) and oral HPV disease. The information gathered from these tests allows Dr. Koeppel to effectively help prevent these diseases and in periodontal disease, to accurately treat it.

As seen on the television show “The Doctors” in a recent episode called “Silent Symptoms You Can’t Ignore”, OralDNA saves lives with just a saliva sample!

The OralDNA Labs are well known worldwide for their leadership in the advancement of wellness through dentistry, and Dr. Koeppel takes pride in his partnership with them as a forerunner in the fight against gum disease and oral cancer.

Knowing about the oral and systemic connection between chronic inflammatory periodontal disease and heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and some cancers Dr. Koeppel chose to have these tests readily available in his office for those serious about their health. The goal of these tests is prevention and early detection for more predictable treatment outcomes.

The OralDNA system includes three separate tests that detect susceptibility to gum disease (periodontitis) and oral cancer. All 3 of these tests are performed using a saliva sample, which is collected in the comfort of Koeppel Dental Group. The sample takes less than a minute to collect and is completely non-invasive! You will be asked to swish a sterile saline (salt) solution in your mouth and spit it into a container, which is then sealed and sent out immediately for testing.

Periodontal Disease

Over 50% of Americans have gum disease. Gum disease ultimately results in the loss of bone structure and teeth, if left untreated. Bacteria that seep into the periodontal pockets surrounding teeth results in inflammation and infection, causing gum disease and more importantly a risk for cardiovascular disease, heart attack and stroke. The MyPerioID PST test identifies genetic susceptibility to gum disease and detects if you have any changes in your DNA. This information allows our doctors at Koeppel Dental Group to decipher if you are at an increased risk for more severe periodontal infections due to an exaggerated immune response.

The MyPerioPath test is for those who have already been diagnosed with periodontal disease. This test is to find out which type and concentration of specific perio-pathogenic bacteria is triggering the disease and causing the infection. Once our doctors know which bacteria is causing the gum disease, we are able to come up with a treatment plan to effectively manage the disease in the best way possible. This test is often used on those who have had no change with treatments in the past.

Oral Cancer

About 36,000 Americans get oral cancer every year. A mucosal viral infection called Oral HPV, the human papilloma virus, can cause oral cancer. It is estimated that 50% of all diagnosed cases of oral cancer are attributed to HPV. HPV is one of the most common virus groups in the world. Over 20 million people in the United States are currently infected with HPV and every year there are about 6 million new cases according to the CDC. Oral HPV are strands of the HPV virus and are found in your mouth, more specifically the oropharyngeal complex or pharynx. Early detection of Oral HPV is crucial because it does not typically show any signs or symptoms.

The OraRisk HPV test can detect if you have an HPV infection in your oral cavity. If you do, you may be at a greater risk to develop oral cancer. Dr. Koeppel, director of Koeppel Dental Group, will then be able to watch you closely for changes in your oral environment that could be signs of oral cancer.

Because smoking and drinking cause a different type of oral cancer, this test is recommended if you are not a smoker and do not drink a lot. This test is also recommended for those who have a family history of oral cancer, signs and symptoms or oral cancer, suspicious oral lesions and those who are sexually active.
